Microsoft Tests Natural-Language File Search in Windows Copilot for Insiders

Access is limited to Copilot+ PCs, with a phased Store rollout introducing a redesigned home centered on recent activity.

Overview

  • The new semantic file search lets users describe what they need—such as a résumé or specific photos—and Copilot locates matching local files by content and description.
  • Availability is restricted to Windows Insider builds on Copilot+ PCs, with the feature tied to Copilot app version 1.25082.132.0 or higher.
  • Copilot draws only from Windows’ Recent list, does not scan the entire system, and processes files only when users explicitly submit or permit access.
  • Supported formats are currently limited to images (.png, .jpeg, .svg), PDFs, Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx, .csv), and text (.txt, .json) stored locally.
  • A refreshed Copilot home surfaces recent apps, files, and conversations; selecting an app launches a Vision-guided help session, and clicking a file uploads it for summaries or analysis as the update rolls out gradually via the Microsoft Store.
