Microsoft Tests Movable Taskbar and New Start Menu Controls in Windows 11

Microsoft is using the Insider Experimental channel to validate changes prior to release.

Overview

  • Windows 11 testers in the Insider Experimental channel can now reposition the taskbar to any edge and choose a compact option in Build 26300.8493.
  • Start gains simple size presets and section-level toggles, with Recommended renamed to Recent and a new switch that controls file suggestions without affecting File Explorer history.
  • Some functions do not yet work when the taskbar is moved, including auto-hide, touch gestures, and the Search box, and Microsoft says these gaps are in progress.
  • Design director Diego Baca says the team is evaluating per‑monitor taskbar positions and drag‑and‑drop repositioning to make placement faster and more flexible.
  • Microsoft told Windows Latest it will ship these features to everyone after fixing integration bugs, tying the work to its Project K2 push to raise Windows 11 quality and address long-standing user requests.
