Microsoft Tests Movable Taskbar and New Start Controls in Windows 11

The Insider-only test signals a broader push to restore user control after years of complaints.

Overview

  • Microsoft is now trialing taskbar movement, a compact taskbar option, and granular Start menu controls in the Windows Insider Experimental channel on Build 26300.8493.
  • Testers can place the taskbar on the top, bottom, left, or right edge of the screen and use a smaller mode that reduces icon size to reclaim workspace on small displays.
  • The Start menu gains section toggles, a small or large size setting, a rename of Recommended to Recent, improved file relevancy, and a switch to hide your name and profile picture.
  • Some functions do not work yet in non-bottom positions, including auto-hide, certain touch gestures, and the Search box, with Microsoft working on fixes before a public rollout.
  • Design leads say per-monitor taskbar positions and drag-and-drop repositioning are under evaluation as part of Project K2, which prioritizes responsiveness and user feedback this year.
