Microsoft Tests Movable, Smaller Taskbar in Windows 11 Insider Build

The Insider-only trial signals a wider return of long-missed customization after years of user pushback.

Microsoft is testing a movable taskbar and a true compact option in Windows 11 Build 26300 for Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel.
Users can place the taskbar on the bottom, top, left, or right, and core UI like Start, Search, and system flyouts open from the new edge in hands-on tests.
The new smaller taskbar shrinks both icon size and the bar’s height to free screen space, which is especially helpful on small displays or vertical layouts.
Some features are not yet supported in alternate positions, including auto-hide, the tablet-optimized taskbar, certain touch gestures, and full search boxes.
Microsoft indicates a broader public rollout will follow in the next few weeks after it gathers feedback from Insiders.
