Microsoft Tests Faster File Explorer and Slimmer Context Menu in Latest Windows 11 Insider Build

Microsoft is using Insider feedback to decide if these File Explorer changes leave preview.

Overview

  • The features are rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels with preview build 26220.7271 (KB5070307) for Windows 11 25H2.
  • An optional background preload aims to cut first‑launch delay for File Explorer and can be turned off in Folder Options under View by unchecking “Enable window preloading for faster launch times,” mirroring Office’s Startup Boost approach.
  • The right‑click menu is being decluttered by moving lesser‑used actions into a new Manage file flyout and grouping cloud options like OneDrive’s Always keep on this device and Free up space under provider menus, with Send to My Phone placed alongside them.
  • Open Folder Location is repositioned next to Open and Open with to improve grouping, and Microsoft says the Manage file label may change based on Feedback Hub input.
  • Hands-on reports describe a noticeably shorter menu and note some actions still appear slowly, and Microsoft has not confirmed a general release timeline beyond ongoing testing.
