Overview
- Windows 11 Version 24H2, due later this summer, will retire the decades-old Blue Screen of Death in favor of a streamlined Black Screen of Death.
- The black screen presents stop codes and the failing driver in plain text to help IT administrators diagnose crashes without manual debugger tools.
- A new Quick Machine Recovery feature will automatically restore non-bootable devices following widespread system failures.
- Security software and EDR tools will no longer run in kernel mode to reduce the risk of severe system errors from third-party components.
- These measures are part of Microsoft’s Windows Resiliency Initiative launched after a faulty CrowdStrike update in July 2024 disabled 8.5 million PCs.
