Microsoft Ships Windows 11 October Patch Tuesday for 25H2/24H2 and 23H2
The release pairs mandatory security fixes with a staged feature drop that begins appearing after installation.
Overview
- KB5066835 updates Windows 11 25H2 to build 26200.6899 and 24H2 to 26100.6899, while KB5066793 updates 23H2 to the 226x1.6050 build line.
- New capabilities include AI actions in File Explorer to edit images or summarize documents (not available in the EEA and some actions require Microsoft 365 with Copilot), refreshed Click to Do tags, movable brightness and volume indicators, a new Edit command-line text editor, passkey plugin support, and accessibility and admin enhancements.
- Microsoft is delivering the updates via Windows Update and as offline .msu installers in the Update Catalog, with catalog packages around 3.7–3.9 GB per architecture versus smaller differential downloads through Windows Update.
- Early testing reported roughly seven minutes to download and install plus a short reboot, and Microsoft notes many features will roll out gradually rather than appearing immediately.
- Microsoft warns of a known issue where some Digital TV and Blu-ray/DVD apps may fail to play protected content correctly, and it notes 23H2 is nearing end of support with only one more monthly update expected in November 2025.
