Microsoft Rolls Out Xbox Full Screen Experience to All Windows Handhelds, Opens PC Preview for Insiders

The controller-first launcher targets faster startup by minimizing Windows processes.

Overview

  • The feature is now generally available on Windows 11 handhelds, where users can enable it under Settings > Gaming > Full screen experience by choosing Xbox as the home app.
  • A preview tailored for laptops, desktops, and tablets is rolling out via the Xbox and Windows Insider programs on Dev and Beta channels, with access gated by the Xbox app and gradual availability.
  • At boot, the experience launches directly into the Xbox PC app with a console-style interface that surfaces games from Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and other libraries, plus a new task switcher and Game Bar integration.
  • By skipping the Explorer shell and trimming background tasks, the mode can free roughly 2GB of RAM, with reviewers reporting frame-rate gains for some titles and no change for others.
  • Players retain control: they can exit to the Windows desktop, stop the experience from starting automatically or set another launcher as the home app, and community tools on GitHub can enable or replicate the interface on unsupported setups.
