Microsoft Repackages Copilot Into Home, Code and Autopilot Workspace

The redesign moves advanced app building and long‑running agents to usage‑based credits, requiring IT teams to set governance and spending limits before wider use.

Overview

  • Microsoft has unified Copilot into three areas — Home for everyday work and embedded Office editing, Code for natural‑language app and automation creation, and Autopilot for persistent cloud agents — with features staged across early previews.
  • Home embeds Word, Excel and PowerPoint so users can create or update real Office files inside Copilot instead of copying content between apps.
  • Code uses GitHub Copilot technology to turn plain‑language descriptions into runnable, sandboxed apps and workflows that can be hosted inside a customer’s Microsoft 365 tenant via the Copilot Managed Runtime preview.
  • Autopilot (formerly Scout) runs as a tenant‑hosted agent with its own identity, memory and workspace so it can continue follow‑up tasks without an active user session, and it is currently expanding in private preview.
  • Microsoft will keep routine Copilot functions on per‑user subscriptions but bill Cowork, Code, Autopilot and long‑running agent work through usage‑based Copilot Credits and add FinOps controls so admins can set budgets, approvals and auditing before charges apply.
