Microsoft Removes Eight OneDrive Copilot Actions From File Explorer

The company says the change will simplify the right-click menu by moving the same AI functions into fewer, consolidated entry points.

Overview

  • Microsoft confirmed in a Microsoft 365 Message Center notice that it will retire eight OneDrive‑tied Copilot actions from File Explorer’s right‑click menu in a staged rollout starting mid‑November and finishing by early December 2026.
  • The eight commands being removed are Summarize, Create FAQ, Compare Files, Ask a question, Explain image, Explain images, Compare images, and Extract text.
  • Microsoft says the underlying capabilities will remain available through the Ask Copilot entry, the Copilot icon in File Explorer Home, and the OneDrive activity center, and users can remove Ask Copilot entirely by uninstalling the Copilot app.
  • The change follows a broader 2026 effort to reduce scattered Copilot entry points in Windows and Outlook, including earlier adjustments to Snipping Tool, Photos, Notepad and taskbar Ask Copilot.
  • For users and IT teams this means small workflow changes and updates to documentation, since familiar one‑click shortcuts will go away even though the same AI tasks can still be launched through consolidated interfaces.
