Microsoft Releases Windows 11 Preview Update With Customizable Context Menu

This optional preview lets users control right-click menus, speeds menu opening, gives an early look at Windows K2 UI fixes before a full November 10 rollout

Overview

  • Microsoft published optional preview KB5127936 on Wednesday, delivering an overhauled context menu that opens faster and reduces clutter while rolling out gradually to users.
  • The update adds direct user controls to declutter the menu, including toggles for which app extensions appear, the option to show Cut/Copy/Paste as list items, and the ability to move Properties to the bottom.
  • File Explorer and UI tweaks shipped in the preview include more consistent search results, a '~' shortcut to jump to the user profile/AppData path, and initial dark mode for the Folder Options dialog.
  • KB5127936 is non-security and optional so it will not install automatically on many PCs; Microsoft recommends Windows Update but also published large offline .msu installers of about 5GB for manual or mass deployment.
  • Devices still on Windows 11 24H2 will not receive this update because that version reached end of support, and Microsoft plans to include these changes in the cumulative rollout to all supported systems on Patch Tuesday, November 10.
