Microsoft Releases Windows 11 KB5089573 Optional Update With Low Latency CPU Boost

The optional May preview installs code that briefly maxes CPU frequency to make menus and app launches feel snappier.

Overview

  • Microsoft released the optional KB5089573 preview at the end of May and the update upgrades Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 devices to builds 26200.8524 and 26100.8524.
  • The update includes a new Low Latency Profile that briefly pushes CPU frequency for 1–3 seconds to speed core shell experiences such as the Start menu, Search, Action Center and some app launches.
  • Microsoft is enabling the performance signals in staged waves from its servers so users may not see speed gains immediately after installation and results will vary by hardware.
  • KB5089573 also changes Windows Hello so face or fingerprint becomes the default sign-in when set up, adds shared-audio and setup naming options, and delivers reliability fixes for File Explorer, touch gestures and Modern Standby resume.
  • The release is part of Microsoft’s ongoing K2 effort to improve Windows responsiveness and is an optional, non-security preview meant for testing before wider rollout so administrators should treat it as a trial update.
