Overview

  • Redmond issued KB5066189 for Windows 11 23H2/22H2, KB5066188 for Windows 10 22H2 and LTSC 2021, and KB5066187 for Windows 10 LTSC 2019 to remediate the problem.
  • The bug, introduced by August’s security releases KB5063875, KB5063709, and KB5063877, caused Reset my PC, recovery via Windows Update, and RemoteWipe CSP to fail.
  • The emergency updates are available as optional downloads through Windows Update and Windows Update for Business, and they can be obtained from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
  • Microsoft recommends installing the out-of-band patches instead of the August security updates if those have not yet been deployed.
  • Windows 11 24H2 was not affected; a separate upgrade error 0x8007007F reported on August 12 was previously resolved by August 15.
