Microsoft Releases AgilitySDK 1.618, Bringing Advanced Shader Delivery to Windows

Broader gains require adoption by developers plus PC storefronts.

Overview

  • The DirectX AgilitySDK update moves out of preview and adds Advanced Shader Delivery, which distributes precompiled shaders at download to curb shader-stutter and long load times.
  • Initial availability begins October 16 for Asus ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X via the Xbox app on select titles.
  • Microsoft’s release includes State Object Database authoring and collection tools, offline compilers, and new Game Installer Registration APIs to enable the workflow.
  • Hardware partners are on board: AMD’s compiler plugin is available now, Intel targets November for offline compiler and driver support, and NVIDIA and Qualcomm have pledged support.
  • Microsoft says the first supported handhelds can see up to 10x faster time-to-game, smoother performance, and improved battery life, though widespread consumer benefit is expected to roll out gradually.
