Overview
- Microsoft unveiled the redesigned Copilot on Friday, Sept. 25, combining Home (Chat and Cowork), Code (natural-language app creation) and Autopilot while bringing full Word, Excel and PowerPoint inside the Copilot interface.
- Autopilot is a rebrand of Scout that runs inside a customer’s Microsoft 365 tenant with its own identity, memory, compute and email-like workspace so it can act like a cloud-based teammate under IT permissions and audit controls.
- Code uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot to turn plain-language descriptions into sandboxed apps, dashboards and automations that can be hosted securely inside a customer tenant.
- Microsoft kept a per-user Copilot license for everyday chat and Office features but added usage-based billing for Cowork, Code, Autopilot and some frontier models and introduced FinOps and admin controls to monitor and limit spend.
- Despite the relaunch, paid Copilot seats are roughly 30 million—about 7% of more than 450 million commercial M365 seats—and Microsoft will roll Home and Code to Frontier early-access in the coming weeks with Autopilot entering private preview by month-end.
