- Microsoft has made reducing Windows 11 memory demand on systems with 8 GB and 16 GB of RAM a top priority for the remainder of 2026 as part of its Project K2 work.
- Engineers will tackle the problem across multiple layers by making WinUI 3 more memory-efficient and by optimizing memory management in Chromium-based components and WebView2.
- The announced work is aimed at improving responsiveness on 8 GB and 16 GB machines and is unlikely to produce meaningful gains for systems that only have 4 GB of RAM.
- Microsoft has not published numeric performance targets and has not said it will raise the official 4 GB minimum requirement, while some Microsoft features such as Copilot-Plus already require 16 GB.
