Overview

  • Starting June 2025, Authenticator will block new password saves, disable its autofill feature in July, and delete all stored passwords by August 2025.
  • Microsoft advises exporting saved credentials to Microsoft Edge to retain autofill functionality after Authenticator’s password tools are removed.
  • Authenticator will continue to support passkeys and two-factor authentication to enable passwordless and multi-factor sign-ins.
  • Passkeys provide device-bound cryptographic credentials that cannot be guessed or reused, reducing risks of phishing and brute-force attacks.
  • An in-app banner and splash screen now prompt users to activate Edge and set up passkeys ahead of the phased removal of password storage.
