Microsoft Paint Tests Editable .paint Project Files and Opacity Controls in Windows 11

The update is available to Windows Insiders now, with wider availability expected in the coming weeks.

Overview

  • New project files use the .paint extension to preserve layers and the editable state so work can be resumed later without flattening.
  • Testing is underway in the Windows Insider Dev and Canary channels on version v11.2508.361.0 or newer with a gradual rollout that may rely on server-side enablement or Windows AI Labs enrollment.
  • An added opacity slider lets users adjust transparency for Brush and Pencil strokes to fine-tune shading and highlights.
  • Hands-on reports say Paint’s project format is simpler than Photoshop, retaining layers, canvas and transparency but not advanced elements such as smart objects or masks.
  • In the same wave of updates, Notepad gains free write, summarize and rewrite features on Copilot Plus PCs using local models without a Microsoft 365 subscription.
