Microsoft Opens India South Central Cloud Region in Hyderabad

Expanding AI-ready capacity for Asia and the Global South, Microsoft’s new Hyderabad region tests Telangana’s planning for water and power.

Overview

  • Microsoft inaugurated the India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad on Thursday, September 24, and said it is the company’s fourth cloud region in India and a strategic hub for Asia and the Global South.
  • The facility uses a resilient three-zone design built to scale for AI workloads and high-density compute, giving local customers lower latency and more on‑shore cloud capacity.
  • Microsoft says the datacentre operates with effectively zero water use for cooling and is funding groundwater recharge, rainwater harvesting and watershed projects around Chandanvelly.
  • Telangana is reviewing fresh applications that total about 12 GW of proposed capacity because of concerns over the large water and power needs, even as the state targets 5 GW by 2029 and reports roughly 300 MW operational with 2 GW in the pipeline.
  • Microsoft has launched local skilling and community programmes including a 600-hour Data Center Academy and says its outreach has reached more than 22,400 people, and other global firms such as AWS, Iron Mountain and NTT DATA are also building large compute capacity in Telangana.
