Overview
- Microsoft offered the program on Monday to employees in the United States, Canada, India and the United Kingdom, making roughly 60,000 people eligible but not obligating anyone to leave.
- The offer applies to roles up to level 70, which includes some mid-level vice president titles, and specifically excludes certain data-center, sales and marketing groups.
- Employees who accept will receive severance-like pay and career transition support under a voluntary, time-limited scheme that Microsoft says will see far fewer takers than the April program.
- The move follows an April U.S. early-retirement offer and July involuntary cuts and comes as Microsoft has increased capital spending on AI infrastructure, reporting about $41 billion of investments in the April–June quarter.
- Actual headcount change will depend on how many workers opt in at the business-unit level, a result that could let teams adjust staffing without broad mandatory layoffs while Microsoft keeps investing in cloud and AI capacity.
