Microsoft Makes WSL Containers Generally Available

Overview

• Microsoft announced WSL Containers are generally available on Wednesday, with users able to install the feature via wsl --update or by downloading releases from Microsoft’s GitHub.
• The release adds a new CLI, wslc.exe (alias container.exe), plus an API that lets native Windows apps programmatically launch and control Linux containers for tasks such as local AI workloads.
• Operational gaps from the preview have been closed with commands for restarting containers, copying files in and out, health checks, real-time container events, network connect/disconnect and configurable mounts and storage.
• Enterprise controls now let security teams see container process, file and network activity through Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, while Intune can disable WSL Containers or restrict image pulls to approved registries.
• Docker Compose–style support (wsl compose up) remains under active development, and the built-in container option could reduce reliance on third-party tools like Docker Desktop and simplify container workflows for Windows developers.
