Microsoft Makes Windows 10 ESU Free in Europe, With 60-Day Microsoft Account Check

The shift in the European Economic Area follows DMA-driven complaints that challenged Microsoft’s earlier requirement to enroll via a OneDrive-linked backup flow.

Overview

  • Consumers in the EEA will receive a no-cost year of Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 through October 14, 2026.
  • Microsoft removed the Windows Backup/OneDrive condition in the EEA, but enrollment still requires a Microsoft account.
  • EEA users must sign in with that account at least once every 60 days or ESU access will pause until they re-enroll.
  • Outside the EEA, consumers must still either enable Windows Backup, pay $30 for the year, or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
  • Businesses can purchase multi‑year ESU coverage of up to three years regardless of region.
