Microsoft Lifts 32GB FAT32 Partition Limit in Windows 11

The decades-old restriction is now removed in the latest Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, allowing partitions up to 2TB via command line.

  • The 32GB limit was originally set during Windows 95 development and remained unchanged for nearly 30 years.
  • The update is currently available in the Windows 11 Canary Channel and applies only to command-line formatting.
  • The GUI-based disk formatting tool still retains the 32GB limit, pending future updates.
  • This change simplifies the process of creating larger FAT32 partitions without third-party tools.
  • Additional enhancements in the build include improvements to Windows Sandbox and battery life optimizations.
