Microsoft Lets Multiple Addressable Values Live Inside a Single Excel Cell

Formulas will be able to address individual values stored together in a single cell during a phased beta rollout.

Overview

  • Microsoft announced on Monday that Excel will support in-cell lists and arrays so a single cell can hold multiple distinct, addressable values including nested arrays.
  • The feature uses an extended curly-brace notation to keep array results inside one cell and adds four new functions—FLATTEN, HAS, HASANY, and HASALL—to inspect and transform those values.
  • The capability is available as a phased preview in the Microsoft 365 Beta Channel and requires minimum builds on Windows (Excel 2610, Build 20520.20000) and macOS (Excel 16.114, Build 26092111) with rollout happening gradually.
  • Core Excel tools do not yet fully support in-cell arrays: PivotTables, charts, Power Query, data validation, and Find & Replace have known limitations, and many nested-array calculations require a new workbook compatibility version 3.
  • Users may simplify layouts and cut helper columns by keeping related data together, but Microsoft warns against using the preview in important workbooks because behavior and integrations can change before general release.
