Microsoft Issues One-Time Windows 10 Update to Fix ESU Enrollment as First ESU Patch Lands

The out-of-band fix appears only on unregistered PCs to restore the enrollment flow for extended security updates.

Overview

  • Microsoft released KB5071959 as an out-of-band update for Windows 10 devices that are not yet registered for Extended Security Updates, addressing setup failures reported by some users.
  • After installing KB5071959 and restarting, users should run the ESU setup wizard to activate eligibility and resume receiving monthly Patch Tuesday security updates.
  • Microsoft says KB5071959 is cumulative through October 14, 2025 and is intended as a one-time transitional measure to ease ESU enrollment.
  • The November ESU-only cumulative update, KB5068781, installs only on registered devices, fixes 63 vulnerabilities including an actively exploited zero-day, and moves Windows 10 to build 19045.6575.
  • Private users in the EU can obtain one year of ESU at no charge with a Microsoft account, though some regions still show temporary availability delays during activation.
