Overview
- Microsoft released an out-of-band Windows 11 update (KB5121767) over the weekend to fix a compatibility conflict that affected a limited number of devices and to allow the previously blocked July security update to be reinstalled.
- The problem was traced to the Intel Innovation Platform Framework (Intel IPF) driver, which manages energy, thermal control and performance, and when conflicted it caused higher power draw, more heat, reduced battery life, performance drops and unexpected restarts.
- Microsoft says most Windows 11 users do not need the emergency update and recommends installing KB5121767 only on devices exhibiting the described symptoms.
- Reports name several Dell models as known examples of affected hardware, including Pro Max, Precision and XPS 17 machines, but it remains unconfirmed whether systems from other manufacturers are impacted.
- KB5121767 is cumulative, updates several Windows AI components to version 1.2605.856.0, and is available automatically for users opted into 'get latest updates,' through Settings > Windows Update, or via the Microsoft Update Catalog.
