Microsoft Issues Emergency Windows 11 Fixes After Patch Tuesday Broke Remote Desktop and Shutdown

Emergency patches are available in the Microsoft Update Catalog following widespread Remote Desktop sign-in failures.

Overview

  • Microsoft released out-of-band updates on January 17 to resolve two major regressions introduced by the January 13 security updates.
  • KB5077744 targets Windows 11 25H2/24H2 to restore Remote Desktop sign-ins, while KB5077797 fixes a shutdown failure on Windows 11 23H2 devices.
  • The Remote Desktop problem stemmed from a broken credential-prompt flow in the Windows App that caused authentication to fail before a session was created.
  • The shutdown bug affected some 23H2 PCs with Secure Launch enabled, causing restarts instead of shutting down or entering hibernation.
  • Microsoft acknowledges an Outlook Classic crash affecting POP account setups with no fix yet, and separate reports cite unconfirmed issues such as temporary black screens, a reset desktop background, and desktop.ini not working.
