Microsoft Issues Emergency Windows 10 Patch to Restore ESU Enrollment

Installing KB5071959 enables blocked PCs to complete signup to receive the November security fixes.

Overview

  • Microsoft released out-of-band update KB5071959 to fix failures in the Windows 10 Consumer ESU enrollment wizard that returned errors such as “Something went wrong.”
  • The first Extended Security Update, KB5068781, also arrived, delivering November Patch Tuesday fixes, including 63 vulnerabilities with one actively exploited elevation-of-privilege flaw.
  • Microsoft instructs affected users to check Windows Update, install KB5071959, restart, run the ESU enrollment wizard, then check again to receive the latest security update.
  • KB5071959 is offered only to devices unable to enroll, and enrollment is required before ESU patches like KB5068781 will be delivered via Windows Update.
  • Consumers can access ESU via a $30 purchase or free options such as Microsoft Rewards points or Windows Backup, with additional free routes available to European Economic Area users.
