Overview
- Microsoft released emergency out-of-band cumulative updates KB5121767 and KB5121768 on Monday to fix the problem on impacted Dell Windows 11 systems.
- The root cause was a June 23 preview update (KB5095093) that added a new Windows USB-C Connection Manager which conflicted with Intel's Innovation Platform Framework (IPF) Processor Participant driver.
- Microsoft blocked the July security update KB5101650 for affected Dell machines because the driver conflict can show a yellow exclamation mark in Device Manager and cause shutdowns, overheating, sluggish performance, and battery drain.
- Microsoft says the OOB fixes are recommended only for affected devices; Windows Autopatch with hotpatch will deliver the update automatically and Intune admins can speed deployment, though PCs with early-update settings may get the patch even if not affected.
- Dell reported the issue during testing and the rapid block-and-fix sequence shows how targeted rollout controls can limit harm, but users who installed the optional June preview or manually sideloaded July updates should check for and install the emergency patch.
