Microsoft Gives Copilot Controlled Access to Local Files and Windows Actions

The company says a new Hybrid Intelligence mix of on-device and cloud models will let Copilot complete multi-step tasks faster while enforcing opt-in privacy and enterprise controls.

Overview

  • Microsoft demonstrated the feature at its Windows and Surface event, Wednesday, showing an Autopilot agent search folders, rename and zip documents, and draft an email using local files.
  • Hybrid Intelligence will let Copilot switch between models that run on the PC and models in the cloud so tasks that do not need heavy compute can run locally for speed and cost savings.
  • The company said Hybrid Intelligence features will roll out to Copilot over the next couple months and that a new quick-action Windows search will arrive this fall on Windows 11 PCs.
  • Microsoft described multiple guardrails including opt-in activation, restricted folder access, agents running under separate accounts, and admin controls for enterprise evaluation.
  • The announcement builds on a 2025 Copilot Actions preview and ties to new hardware—the Surface Laptop Ultra with Nvidia RTX Spark—to push on-device AI and deepen Copilot’s role in enterprise workflows.
