Microsoft Extends Free Windows 10 Security Updates Through October 2027

The company updated its support pages on June 25, 2026 to give personal PC users another year of security patches and simple enrollment options.

Overview

  • Microsoft disclosed Thursday that it quietly extended the Windows 10 consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program so coverage and enrollment run through Oct. 12, 2027.
  • Devices already enrolled will have coverage extended automatically and unenrolled personal PCs can join by signing in and syncing a Microsoft account, redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or paying a one‑time $30 fee.
  • The consumer extension applies only to personal devices and does not change the enterprise ESU track, which remains a paid program available through October 2028 for managed or domain-joined systems.
  • The company made the change by editing support documentation and adding an editor’s note to a Windows Experience Blog post instead of issuing a standalone announcement, prompting outlets to call the rollout low profile.
  • The move gives hundreds of millions of Windows 10 users more time to upgrade as many older or incompatible PCs remain on Windows 10 and as hardware costs and Windows 11 requirements limit some users’ ability to buy new machines.
