Overview

  • Microsoft will provide free Extended Security Updates for Windows 10 personal devices through October 13, 2026, for users who either enable Windows Backup to sync data with OneDrive or redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
  • A new enrollment wizard will begin rolling out to general Windows 10 users in mid-August, offering backup, reward point and paid fee options directly through Settings and desktop notifications.
  • Commercial customers must purchase ESU coverage at $61 per device for the first year, with annual renewals available for up to three years at increasing costs.
  • Enabling Windows Backup requires signing in with a Microsoft account and uses OneDrive storage, which includes 5 GB of free space and may incur additional charges for larger backups.
  • Although core support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025, Microsoft will continue security updates for Microsoft 365 apps and Defender through October 2028.
