Microsoft Extends Free Windows 10 Security Updates for Consumers to October 2027

The extra year gives private users more time to find a suitable PC, keeping their devices protected during the transition to Windows 11.

Overview

  • Microsoft updated its public blog and press materials on Monday to extend the Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program for private devices through 12 October 2027.
  • Users already enrolled in the ESU program will keep receiving monthly security patches automatically and do not need to take any action to remain protected.
  • Microsoft will not charge private consumers for the extra year of ESU, while enterprise customers remain subject to paid ESU plans.
  • Security fixes for Windows 10 will continue to be delivered on regular Patch Tuesday cycles and users who are not yet enrolled can still sign up or use available tools to enable ESU.
  • The move gives remaining Windows 10 users more time to plan upgrades and could slow immediate Windows 11 migration, with StatCounter data showing Windows 10 still on roughly a quarter of machines in May 2026.
