Microsoft Ends Windows 10 Support, Activates One-Year ESU Option

A one-year Extended Security Updates option provides a temporary safety net for PCs that cannot upgrade to Windows 11.

Overview

  • As of October 14, 2025, non‑LTSC Windows 10 editions no longer receive security or feature updates by default, though devices continue to operate.
  • Consumers can enroll in Extended Security Updates through October 13, 2026 via a free OneDrive/Windows Backup route, a $30 payment, or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points.
  • In the European Economic Area, individual users can access ESU at no cost without cloud backup, with periodic Microsoft account sign‑ins required to remain enrolled.
  • Enterprises can purchase up to three years of ESUs (starting around $61 per device per year and doubling annually), while certain Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC releases remain supported into 2027–2029.
  • Roughly one‑third of Windows PCs—about 400 million by some estimates—still run Windows 10, including 32.18% of Steam users, as security experts warn of a growing ‘security cliff’ for unpatched systems and Microsoft urges upgrades to Windows 11 or migration options like Windows 365.
