Microsoft Deepens Copilot in Windows 11 With Voice, Vision and Taskbar Access

The move follows Windows 10's support cutoff.

Overview

  • A new opt-in wake word lets users say "Hey Copilot" to start hands-free conversations, with a chime, on-screen mic indicator and a "Goodbye" command to end sessions.
  • Copilot Vision can analyze shared windows or the desktop for real-time guidance—such as reviewing an entire PowerPoint or highlighting next steps—and is rolling out in markets where Copilot is offered.
  • An Ask Copilot button in the taskbar is appearing for Windows Insiders to provide one-click access to voice, vision and local search of apps, files and settings, with the option to replace the search field.
  • Experimental Copilot Actions in Insider builds aim to execute tasks on local files and the web, with protections including separate agent accounts, code signing, least-privilege access and action logging; connectors can link Outlook and Google services for calendar, email and files.
  • Microsoft says these capabilities will work across all Windows 11 devices—not just Copilot+ PCs—with broader, opt-in rollout over the coming months and faster performance on NPU-equipped hardware.
