Microsoft Confirms Windows Update Shutdown Bug, Sets Fix for Nov. 11

Windows 11 version 23H2 reaches end of support the same day, increasing urgency to upgrade.

Overview

  • Microsoft confirmed a long-running issue that caused the “Update and shutdown” option in Windows 10 and 11 to restart devices, affecting millions and draining laptop batteries.
  • The company released an optional October update (KB5067036) to address the behavior and will fold the fix into the November 11 Patch Tuesday rollout.
  • Support for Windows 11 23H2 ends on November 11 for Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations and SE users, who are being directed to upgrade to 24H2 or 25H2.
  • Devices with duplicated security identifiers are blocked from upgrading to 24H2 or 25H2, and Microsoft advises checking SIDs with PsGetsid and using Sysprep to create unique IDs.
  • Microsoft says other issues persist, including driver error 0x80070103 and a 0xc0000005 blue screen on some older Nvidia GPUs that have only partial mitigations so far.
