Microsoft Confirms Optional Windows Update Can Reset Cursors and Wallpapers

Affected users should file Feedback Hub reports because Microsoft says it will deploy targeted fixes and a wider driver block with September security updates.

  • Microsoft acknowledged on August 31 that optional preview updates starting with the August 27 release (KB5120998) can change or reset custom mouse-cursor and wallpaper settings on Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.
  • Many users reported that the problem shows as oversized white cursors or a plain black desktop and that uninstalling the optional preview update typically restores their previous cursor and wallpaper settings.
  • Separately, Microsoft confirmed earlier Defender updates from early August can wrongly report Microsoft Defender as “off” even though real-time protection continues to run and the company plans a corrective update.
  • Microsoft has already blocked the third-party inpoutx64 driver from loading on systems with the game ARC Raiders and said it will roll out a broader driver block with the September Patch Tuesday security updates to address game compatibility issues.
  • Preview updates must be installed manually so many devices were unaffected, Microsoft is asking affected users to submit Feedback Hub diagnostics, and regular Patch Tuesday releases are the expected channel for wider fixes and mitigations.
