Microsoft Confirms Free Windows 10 Security Updates for EEA Users as In-OS Enrollment Nears

Eligibility requires a signed-in Microsoft Account used at least every 60 days to maintain coverage.

Overview

  • Windows 10 is now displaying notices on some PCs that ESU registration is “coming soon,” though the sign-up flow is not yet active.
  • Microsoft says private users in the European Economic Area will be able to enroll through a Settings wizard in early October.
  • The free Extended Security Updates will run through October 13, 2026 for Home and Pro devices in EU countries plus Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein.
  • ESU delivery depends on an active Microsoft Account on the device, with updates paused if the account goes unused for roughly 60 days.
  • Outside the EEA, including the United States, ESU access remains a paid option reported at about $30.
