Overview

  • Microsoft said the October 2025 monthly security release will be the last for Windows 10 version 22H2 across Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise, as well as the 2015 LTSB editions.
  • About 700 million users were told they have roughly 60 days to choose an Extended Security Updates path or upgrade to Windows 11, with August’s patch already delivered and only two more updates remaining before the cutoff.
  • Home users can enroll in ESU via a Settings wizard either for free by signing in with a Microsoft account and syncing through Windows Backup/OneDrive or by redeeming 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or by paying $30 to cover up to ten PCs on one account.
  • The urgency follows Microsoft fixing more than 100 vulnerabilities, and devices that remain on these Windows 10 versions after October will stop receiving monthly security and preview updates.
  • Microsoft also set a five‑week cap on pausing Microsoft Store app updates, and privacy concerns over Windows 11’s AI features such as the Recall screenshot tool are shaping some users’ upgrade decisions.
