Microsoft Clarifies Gaming Copilot Data Use Following Privacy Uproar

Microsoft says model training draws from user chats.

Overview

  • Microsoft told Tom's Hardware that Gaming Copilot takes in-session screenshots only when actively used to provide contextual assistance and that these images are not used to train AI models.
  • The company confirmed that text or voice conversations with the assistant may be used to improve the AI, with controls available under Game Bar > Settings > Privacy Settings.
  • The feature is enabled by default on Windows 11 via the Game Bar, a setup that has fueled user concerns over data collection and training controls.
  • Tom's Guide reports that turning off model training on text is possible in Privacy Settings, but removing the feature entirely requires uninstalling Xbox Game Bar through PowerShell.
  • Gaming Copilot rolled out globally last month to PCs and the Xbox mobile app and tailors answers using Xbox account activity, play history, and achievements.
