Microsoft Brings Remote PC Access Into Windows App

The change unifies cloud-hosted with direct PC connections in one app to simplify remote access for individuals and organizations.

Overview

  • Microsoft has moved Remote PC connections in the Windows App from public preview to general availability, enabling users to add direct connections by PC name or IP address.
  • Users can authenticate directly to target machines without a work or school account, which makes the feature accessible to individuals and small teams.
  • The Windows App lets users customize display settings, redirect local resources such as drives or printers, save connections, and pin frequently used devices to Favorites for fast reconnection.
  • To use the feature, Remote Desktop must be enabled on the target PC and the Windows App must be installed or updated from the Microsoft Store, then users select Add a Remote PC to connect.
  • The release folds traditional remote access into the app’s existing cloud workflow for Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box, and Microsoft says public-preview feedback helped shape the final update which could ease mixed cloud and on‑premises workflows.
