Microsoft Begins Rollout of Free Windows 10 Extended Security Updates in the EEA

Eligible PCs can enroll from Windows Update using a Microsoft account.

Overview

  • A registration link for the one-year ESU has started appearing on some Windows 10 Home PCs, with users signed in as administrators, according to Heise.
  • Devices must run Windows 10 version 22H2 with a consumer license (Home, Pro, Pro Education or Workstations), have current updates installed and be accessed by an admin user.
  • Enrollment requires signing in with a Microsoft account on the PC, and Microsoft warns updates may stop after up to 60 days if the account is not kept signed in.
  • Registration can activate ESU on up to ten devices per account, with an Add device option available on additional PCs.
  • The free EEA offer follows pressure from consumer group Euroconsumers over earlier conditions, while Germany’s VZBV calls it a one-year reprieve that leaves broader support rules unresolved through October 2026.
