Microsoft Azure Outage Eases as Rollback to 'Last Known Good' Configuration Takes Hold

Microsoft traced the disruption to an Azure Front Door configuration error that cascaded through DNS routing.

Overview

  • Issues began around 16:00 UTC, disrupting access to Azure services and Microsoft 365 offerings such as Outlook, Teams, Xbox, Minecraft and Copilot.
  • Mitigation included blocking Azure Front Door changes, failing the portal away from AFD, rerouting traffic and deploying a rollback, with Microsoft reporting initial recovery and node restoration.
  • Customer configuration changes remain temporarily blocked while engineers monitor recovery and route traffic through healthy nodes.
  • User reports on Downdetector peaked at more than 18,000 for Azure and nearly 11,700 for Microsoft 365 before trending downward as services recovered.
  • Operational knock-on effects were reported by businesses including Alaska Airlines, Vodafone, Heathrow and NatWest, as Microsoft advised programmatic access via PowerShell or CLI when the portal was impaired.
