Overview

  • Microsoft is issuing final in-app warnings that all stored passwords will be erased on Friday, August 1, unless users migrate their credentials.
  • Passkey migration uses Authenticator’s guided setup to create unique cryptographic credentials secured by biometrics or a PIN for each compatible service.
  • Existing passwords remain synced to users’ Microsoft accounts and can be retrieved after the deadline by installing and logging into the Edge browser.
  • An “Export Passwords” tool in the Authenticator app lets users back up their credentials to a file for import into other password managers.
  • Authenticator will continue to support multi-factor authentication, one-time codes and biometric logins for services that accept passkeys.
