Microsoft Authenticator Stops Accepting New Passwords as Autofill Removal Looms

Migrating stored credentials to Edge or other managers prepares users for a full password purge, encouraging adoption of passkeys

Overview

  • Since June 1, Authenticator no longer accepts new passwords for storage or import
  • Beginning in July, the app will disable autofill for saved passwords and delete stored payment information
  • All passwords saved in Authenticator will become inaccessible in August when Microsoft erases remaining credentials
  • Microsoft recommends exporting passwords to Edge or third-party managers before the features retire
  • Authenticator will continue to provide multifactor authentication codes and support passkeys for passwordless sign-ins
