Microsoft Adds App-Only Window Switcher to PowerToys

Users can open a configurable shortcut to see an Alt+Tab-style overlay that lists only the focused app’s windows.

Overview

  • PowerToys version 0.101.2362.0, released Tuesday, August 25, 2026, formally adds Window Hopper, a new utility that focuses window switching on the current application.
  • Once enabled in PowerToys settings, Window Hopper opens with the default Alt + backtick shortcut and shows an overlay that cycles only through separate windows of the focused app.
  • The update also includes a compact Command Palette mode, ZoomIt improvements such as DemoMirror and webcam background blur, PowerDisplay linked brightness controls, and a new Insider channel for early builds.
  • Some users have reported that features from the release roll out in stages and may not appear immediately in every local install, so Window Hopper may be absent until PowerToys updates fully propagate or the user opts into the Insider channel.
  • PowerToys is an open-source toolkit Microsoft revived in 2019 and the Window Hopper project, originally called AltWindowCycle, aims to reduce Alt+Tab clutter and speed keyboard-driven workflows for people who use many windows of the same app.
