Microsoft Abandons Dynamic Wallpaper Plans for Windows 11

The feature, intended to bring animated desktop backgrounds to Windows 11, has been scrapped after years of development and internal testing.

Dynamic wallpapers were designed to align with Windows 11's centered Start menu and taskbar, offering adaptive animations for light and dark modes.
The feature was initially planned for release in the 22H2 and 23H2 updates but was removed from the latest 24H2 build.
Designer Sergey Kisselev, who worked on the project, showcased mockups of the canceled wallpapers on Behance, highlighting their focus on low-cost, education-focused devices.
The dynamic wallpapers were powered by the same system component as AI-enhanced depth effect backgrounds, which have also been discontinued.
Users seeking animated desktop backgrounds on Windows 11 must now rely on third-party apps like Wallpaper Engine.
