Microsoft Abandons Caledonia Data Center Site After Resident Backlash

The company says it will pursue an alternate location in Southeast Wisconsin to match local priorities.

Overview

  • Microsoft withdrew from the proposed 244-acre Caledonia campus after weeks of public opposition, including hundreds of speakers and a petition with more than 2,000 signatures.
  • The scrapped plan, known as Project Nova, envisioned three data center buildings and a 15-acre electrical substation near Douglas Avenue and County Line Road across from the Oak Creek power plant.
  • A 5–2 plan commission vote had advanced rezoning from agricultural to light industrial, but the status of that change is now uncertain after the withdrawal.
  • Racine County officials say they are in contact with Microsoft and will work to identify an alternative site in the county, potentially including another parcel in Caledonia.
  • Microsoft says its separate developments in Mount Pleasant and Kenosha continue, as similar data center proposals in Port Washington and Menomonie face rising local scrutiny over energy, water use and incentives.
