Microburst Rips Through Tempe, Toppling Trees and Knocking Out Power

The National Weather Service confirmed straight-line winds, not a tornado.

Overview

  • A concentrated downburst struck Tempe around early afternoon, with the National Weather Service confirming a microburst as the cause of the damage.
  • Wind gusts were reported up to 71 mph as a roof was torn off a building near Kyrene and Baseline, semi-trucks tipped, and large trees and power poles fell from Elliot to Baseline and in the Dwight Park area.
  • Utilities reported more than 34,000 customers without electricity at the peak, including about 15,700 SRP and nearly 5,000 APS customers at 4:10 p.m., with most service restored by late afternoon.
  • Flash flood warnings were issued across the East Valley as brief, intense downpours flooded streets, and county gauges measured 0.75 inches at ASU in Tempe by 4:55 p.m.
  • Valley Metro suspended A Line light rail service between the Downtown Hub and Gilbert Rd/Main St., and ASU’s Tempe campus reported outages before issuing an all-clear once power was largely restored.
