Michoacán and Oaxaca Finalize Day of the Dead Plans as Tourism Surge Expected

Officials pair firm attendance targets with clear rules on alcohol sales.

  • Michoacán’s tourism agency forecasts about 420,000 visitors and at least 500 million pesos in economic impact for Oct. 24–Nov. 2, with events spanning Pátzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan, Erongarícuaro, Quiroga and Salvador Escalante.
  • Oaxaca expects more than 89,000 visitors and over 381 million pesos in spending, with activities scheduled Oct. 26–Nov. 3 including a historic center façade contest, a grand comparsa and a monumental sand carpet in Jalatlaco.
  • Pátzcuaro reports roughly 90% hotel occupancy and projects about 280,000 attendees, while limiting alcohol sales to 23:00 in convenience stores and 02:00 in bars and allowing public consumption so long as order is maintained.
  • Morelia will bar alcohol sales at fewer than 30 shops around the Panteón Civil from Oct. 31 to Nov. 2 and will host the Feria del Pan (Oct. 17–19), the Calaverita de Azúcar festival (Oct. 24–26) and Miss Catrina Universe (Oct. 25).
  • Michoacán will showcase its traditions at Xcaret’s Festival de Tradiciones Vida y Muerte from Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 with the ‘Almas danzantes’ show, traditional cooks, artisans and producers, and will stage paid-access ‘Camino de las Ánimas’ night performances in Urandén.
